I started my practice by studying massage in January 1975, followed by my immediate study with Lauren Berry RPT learning manipulations and body works for 3 years.
I then studied acupuncture and Rolfing massage technique from 1983-1986, practicing this combination until 1997.
From 1997-1998 I studied a combination of somatic and Feldenkrais method work as well as continuing my studies in acupuncture.
At this point I started to shift my practice with a minimal emphasis on manipulation although it can be valuable when employed, for instance, with the foot.
The main reason I shifted my practice was that I felt it connected my practice to my clients better, for example shifting clients from being face down to on their side for lower back work. I was able to see how much mobility my clients had, while having better access to the muscles. It is a simplified method that focuses on finding tightness, relaxing the body and relieving tension from muscles so that the body can heal itself.
One other subject I would like to comment on has to do with spasms. One of the things I find in my practice is that those who have long term problems often started physical activity or even physical therapy while a muscle was in spasm.
To my mind it is important to make sure the body is relaxed and supple before any physical activities. Without this, the body can seem more injured or even weaker than it really is.
There is so much more beyond just strength to focus on, like physical structure, tension or even your emotions. From minor to major injuries, I believe this can have a huge impact on ones healing and over all health.
